the first book

I decided to not use my tape and only use my papers on this one. I followed Twyla's advice and limited myself to see how I would do. I thought this origami figure would work well (it's the top part of a box). I thought that a book could be defined as information stored on paper that is bound together, and since it didn't say permanently bound, I thought that this would count. Each piece of the figure can be opened to view a secret inner message.

Susan Striepe—Paper + Tape Book

This book was a creative challenge. Transforming two unrelated materials into one single product was exciting. The possibilities of so many resolutions were looming on the horizon. Conservative ideas drove me into action and as the process developed it seemed that the materials themselves had their own voice and took over. Ultimately, I was surprised at the correlation between scotch tape and encaustic. It poses as a wonderful sketch mode for this medium. Also, a more safe option for younger students, as encaustic has some safety issues.

BLINDFOLD DRAWING

KFerrell, Paper + Tape

For this assignment we were given two sheets of paper and a roll of scotch tape and told to make a book. After playing with the tape I decided on a conventional style book with the tape for pages. I like the texture, transparency and grid created by the overlapped layers of tape.
